A Step Towards a Safe Home: Preparing for Repairs in Donetsk and Kharkiv Regions

Ongoing

May 22, 2026

A home is more than walls and a roof. It is a place where family stories, childhood memories, and a sense of safety are preserved. Yet a single shelling incident can damage a home and deprive a family of its usual living conditions.

In Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, the team of Civil Society Organization “TSE – NASHA SPRAVA!” is conducting assessments of private houses damaged by shelling. Specialists assess the condition of the housing, determine the nature and scope of the required work, and prepare for the next stage: carrying out repairs.

117 Households Assessed

During the preparatory stage, the local teams of Civil Society Organization “TSE – NASHA SPRAVA!” assessed 117 private households.

In Donetsk Region, assessments were conducted in Cherkaska Community of Kramatorsk District, in the villages of Pryvillia, Prylisne, and Maidan.

In Kharkiv Region, the team worked in Shevchenkivska Community of Kupiansk District, in the villages of Hetmanivka, Horozhanivka, Hroza, Tetianivka, Myropillia, Oleksandrivka, and the settlement of Shevchenkove.

During the field visits, specialists:

  • inspected damaged houses;

  • documented the nature and extent of the damage;

  • determined the need for repair work;

  • prepared preliminary estimates of the required materials;

  • verified that households met the eligibility criteria for assistance.

Results as of August

The project plans to carry out repair work in 64 private households in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions.

As of the reporting period, 52 households have received final approval.

In Donetsk Region, 45 households have been preliminarily selected. Cost estimates have already been prepared for 40 of them, and memoranda on further cooperation have been sent for signature.

No final decision has yet been made regarding the remaining 5 households. A preliminary technical assessment indicated that the required scope of work may exceed the limits of medium repairs and fall within the category of major repairs. Specialists are currently conducting additional checks to determine whether assistance can be provided to these families within the project.

In Kharkiv Region, 12 households have been approved. Cost estimates have already been prepared for them, while the memoranda on further cooperation are still being processed.

For the remaining households, the selection process and verification of the feasibility of the planned repair work are continuing.

Who Will Receive Assistance

The assistance is intended primarily for people and families who find it difficult to restore their damaged homes independently, including:

  • older persons living alone;

  • persons with disabilities;

  • families with multiple children;

  • single mothers and fathers;

  • other households in vulnerable circumstances.

The selection process takes into account the technical condition of the home, the nature of the damage, the family’s level of vulnerability, and compliance with the programme’s established criteria

The First Step Towards Restoring Safety

Behind every assessed address is more than a damaged roof, shattered windows, or ruined walls. There are people who want to bring warmth back into their homes and feel at home again.

The assessment, preparation of a cost estimate, and signing of a memorandum are important stages before repair work begins. They help identify each household’s needs accurately, plan the use of materials, and ensure high-quality work.

The next stage is the repair work and the gradual restoration of damaged homes to a safe and habitable condition.

Assistance is provided by Civil Society Organization “TSE – NASHA SPRAVA!” with financial support from the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).
